Next Wednesday, the US Congress is set to cement President-elect Joe Biden’s election win. There’s going to be a formal count of Electoral Colleges that have already been certified by all the senates.
It all seems to be a normal, smooth process. However, a group of Republicans senators announced that they will object to certification of the Electoral College. They promised long hours or even days of protests in order to delay the announcement of Congress.
This is the latest in a series of efforts made by Donald Trump and his supporters to overturn the election. Since the announcement of Biden’s victory in November’s election, Trump has time and again objected to the result and called the vote rigged.
However, several federal courts along with the US Supreme Court have said that no act of fraud has been found in November's election.
Most Republican senators describe the action of their colleagues as a threat to the integrity of the institutions and democracy.
This joint session of Congress does not have the power to change the result of November's election. However these republicans are planning to move forward with their planned protest and ask for a 10-day audit in the States that are in dispute.
