As many argue that Free Trade Zones serve as back doors to the international economy, Iran's free zones have been launched to attract foreign investment amid the restrictions imposed by the sanctions.

These zones can play a significant role in lessening the impact of unlawful embargos. These statements were made at a conference held in the northern Iranian port city of Bandar Anzali.

The International Conference of Eurasian Economic Union explored the role of free zones in the promotion of regional relations. On the sidelines of this conference, a number of projects were either inaugurated or kicked off to boost the strategic Iranian port of the Caspian Sea.

Anzali port is one of the most active harbors among the Caspian Sea littoral states and is the largest northern seaboard of Iran. Its proximity to capital Tehran has turned the free zone into a main economic corridor.
