Kuwait's cabinet submits resignation, emir asks PM to continue preparations for legislative elections

Kuwait’s new emir has called the Persian Gulf kingdom’s cabinet to carry on its duties and get ready for parliamentary elections slated for later this year after the prime minister tendered his government’s resignation.

The official news agency KUNA reported on Tuesday that Sabah met Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al Sabah and, as per the country’s constitution, “submitted his resignation and that of his government to ensure ministerial responsibilities are held by those who enjoy the emir’s confidence.”

Sheikh Nawaf, however, asked the cabinet to carry on its duties and make preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The new monarch expressed his full confidence in the current cabinet, which was formed last December, the report added.

Kuwait swears in its new emir, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, amid preparations to receive the body of late ruler Sheikh Sabah.

The 83-year-old Sheikh Nawaf, the former crown prince of Kuwait, succeeded his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al Sabah, who died on September 29 at the age of 91.

Kuwaitis have been waiting for the new monarch to name a crown prince. His pick must be approved by the parliament.

Sheikh Nawaf lacks his half-brother’s experience as a conciliator. Sheikh Sabah was the architect of his country’s modern foreign policy and a mediator in some of the worst crises to grip the Persian Gulf region.
