UK commemorates Windrush Day amid Black Lives Matter protests

Anti immigration rhetoric has reached fever pitch in Britain over the last few years, and in particular the treatment of Britain's Caribbean communities. On Windrush Day, and as Black Lives matter protests continue around the world, the Windrush scandal, continues the wrongful deportation and detention of scores of almost exclusively Black Britons, with their demands for justice remaining unheard.
The government has been heavily criticized for deporting dozens of British citizens and detaining many others. Indeed, the long awaited Windrush Inquiry has been highly critical of the hostile environment created by former prime minister, Theresa May while at the Home Office, which continues under Priti Patel and Boris Johnson's government
Jacqueline McKenzie, a lawyer representing Windrush victims has continually been speaking out for those affected following the Windrush review which many argued fell short of a real commitment to tackle the problem.
While the government has tried to play down the extent of the Windrush scandal, for many in Britain, the revelations have lifted the lid on just how insidious racism UK has become.
As many around the country mark Windrush day, many more continue to demand that the government gets its house in order and gives justice to Windrush generation, ensures compensation to those promised and to ensure that a shameful chapter in British history is never again repeated.
