Suspect, police officer killed in shooting in US
A white police officer and an African-American man have been killed in the US state of Nebraska during a shooting incident , police say.
Officer Kerrie Orozco, 29, and her shooter, 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler, both died on Wednesday in the city of Omaha at the same hospital they were rushed to according to Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.
Orozco was part of a fugitive task force on the hunt for Wheeler who was wanted by law enforcement agencies to serve a felony arrest warrant.
Wheeler was wanted on a warrant charging him in a previous shooting, according to Todd Schmaderer “opened fire on the officers as they approached him.”
Officers fired back, and Wheeler was later found behind a residence suffering from gunfire injuries, he said.
"Mr. Wheeler is a convicted felon and a known gang member," said Schmaderer.
The killing of several unarmed black men by white police officers in recent months and decisions by grand juries not to indict the officers triggered large-scale protests across the United States.
More than 320,000 Americans were killed by gunshots over the last decade and at least 750,000 were injured according to a report by Mother Jones last month.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the United States, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.
Furthermore, hundreds of children die annually in gun homicides when toddlers accidentally shoot themselves or a sibling with an unsecured gun.
