At least four people have lost their lives and nearly 20 have been injured in a fire at two adjoining timber hostels in the Japanese city of Kawasaki, southwest of the capital Tokyo, reports say.
Fire broke out in one of the buildings early on Sunday and completely burned down the two hostels, with a total floor space of about 1,000 square meters, officials said.
Following the incident, the fire department dispatched 21 fire trucks and nine ambulances to the site.
“Three were confirmed dead in the hospitals, while one was found dead in the debris of the fire,” said an official of Kawasaki Fire Department.
The gender and Identities of the deceased people are still unknown, the unnamed official added.
According to firefighters, 19 people were also injured and were taken to hospitals.
Out of 74 people listed on the guest register of the two hostels, around seven remained unaccounted for, Japanese Kyodo News agency reported.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, authorities said.
