Israel jamming devices to blame for Palestinians' syncope
The Palestinian Authority’s Department of Prisoners’ Affairs has warned that jamming devices installed in Ofer prison cause fainting attacks among prisoners.
The devices have been planted in different sections of the prison and are upgraded constantly and that explains why prisoners have passed out, the Department’s website said on Thursday.
“What is happening in Ofer prison is a violation of all international laws and norms. Every day, a number of prisoners are being transferred to clinic due to sudden loss of consciousness as a result of exposure to jamming devices, which are only few meters away," Issa Qaraqe, head of Prisoners’ Affairs Department, said.
Qaraqe urged international bodies, particularly the World Health Organization and the Red Cross, to seriously deal with this dangerous phenomenon, which, he said, causes extensive spread of diseases among prisoners.
He said indifference toward this issue means giving green light to the Israeli occupation and its revenge policies against thousands of prisoners.
Qaraqe stated that four new sections are to be built in Ofer prison before April. The new sections could accommodate 240 prisoners.
“We will confront this policy with all our possibilities,” he added.
Ofer Prison is located in the occupied West Bank, between Ramallah and the Givat Ze’ev settlement. It was opened in 1988, a year after the outbreak of the first Intifada and was shut down in 1995 as a part of the Oslo Peace process. The prison was reopened in 2002 after the second Intifada started.
