A container ship and an armed boat have exchanged fire in a maritime incident near Yemen’s coast after the vessel was approached by the boat, maritime authorities say.

Maritime authorities said on Wednesday that a boat carrying six armed men approached a container vessel southwest of the industrial port town of Balhaf.

According to reports, the incident occurred about 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, where security guards aboard a container ship exchanged fire with armed men after a boat carrying the attackers approached the vessel.

No further details about the incident have been released so far, and authorities have not yet provided additional information regarding possible casualties, damage, or the identities of those involved.

The development comes days after another maritime incident in the region, when the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported receiving information about an incident approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Masirah Island off the coast of Oman.

According to the agency, a tanker caught fire in the area, forcing the evacuation of all crew members. The UKMTO also said it had received no reports of pollution or environmental damage resulting from the incident.

The incident is the latest in the Gulf of Aden. On 22 – 23 May, at least three vessels reported being approached by a small craft in the Gulf of Aden with an armed security team opening fire in one of the cases.

This comes as since the beginning of the US–Israeli aggression against Iran in February, Yemen’s armed forces have announced a ban on the navigation of vessels linked to the Israeli regime in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, warning that such ships may be treated as legitimate targets.

Yemen’s armed forces say the measure is part of its broader stance in support of resistance movements in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq, as well as the Islamic Republic of Iran, and describes the decision as a response to the ongoing US–Israeli onslaught against the axis of resistance in the region.
