Key to Strait of Hormuz in Iran’s ‘capable hands’: Leader’s advisor

Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, says the key to the Strait of Hormuz remains in Iran’s “capable hands” to safeguard the country’s security and repel extra-regional forces.

“The history of Iranian diplomacy from Erzurum to the Islamabad negotiations is based on a single principle: ‘Safeguarding our dear Iran,’” Velayati wrote in a post on his X account on Sunday.

He added that just as the Strait of Abu al-Hayat has always been a symbol of repelling strangers at the heart of the Iranian territory, “so too is the key to the ‘Strait of Hormuz’ today in our capable hands.”

The remarks come after 21-hours of negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, Pakistan, came to an end without an agreement.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday that Washington failed to win Tehran’s trust during the negotiations.

“My colleagues raised forward-looking initiatives, but the opposite side ultimately failed to win the trust of the Iranian delegation in this round of negotiations,” he added.

Tehran, he said, will spare no effort to consolidate the achievements of Iran’s 40-day national defense.

The talks followed a 40-day war of aggression by the US-Israeli axis against the Islamic Republic, which was paused after the US accepted Iran’s proposal for a permanent ceasefire.

During the war, Iranian armed forces unleashed 100 waves of successful retaliatory strikes against sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region.

They also blocked the Strait of Hormuz to oil and gas tankers affiliated with the adversaries and those cooperating with them in an attempt to maintain security at the strategic waterway.
