The Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran has vowed retaliation after the country’s naval frigate Dena was targeted in an attack that led to the martyrdom of several young cadets who were returning from an international naval exercise.
In a statement released on Thursday, the army described the incident as a “cowardly attack,” saying the vessel was struck nearly 2,000 miles away while on a training mission.
According to the statement, the cadets aboard the ship had been participating in the “Milan 2026” naval exercise, a multinational maritime drill in India, referred to as a peace exercise, and were on their way back when the attack occurred.
The army slammed the United States Navy for carrying out the strike without warning, saying it took place hundreds of miles away from the active war zone and violated international maritime norms and humanitarian law.
“The cowardly attack on the destroyer Dena, about 2,000 miles from the battlefield, which resulted in the martyrdom of young students returning from the Milan 2026 peace exercise, showed that global arrogance abides by none of the international rules,” the statement said.
It added that the attack once again demonstrated Washington’s disregard for international regulations governing maritime conduct and armed conflict.
The Iranian military said the martyrdom of the young cadets would strengthen the determination of the Iranian people and armed forces to seek revenge.
“The martyrdom of those dear young men will only strengthen the resolve of the great Iranian nation and the fighters of Islam to avenge the pure blood of their comrades,” the statement said.
The army further warned that its forces are now more determined than ever to respond.
“The brave fighters of the army, united in oath and more determined than before, will, with the help of Almighty God, make the American and Zionist enemies regret their actions,” it added.
The statement comes amid the escalation of tensions following the Israeli-American aggression against Iran on Saturday, which has so far claimed the lives of over 1,200 Iranians.
Earlier on Thursday, in a post on X, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also condemned the terrorist attack on the Frigate Dena.
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran's shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India's Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he wrote.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set.”
