Swiss to act as venue of next round of Iran-US talks: Report

Flags of Iran, Oman, and the United States (L to R) are seen in this file photo from a previous round of Iran-US nuclear talks.

Switzerland has confirmed that it will act as the venue for a second round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, as the two countries seek to settle disputes around Tehran’s nuclear program.

The Swiss foreign ministry told AFP on Saturday that the Persian Gulf country of Oman will act as mediator in the Iran-US talks planned for next week.

“Switzerland stands ready at all times to offer its good offices to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran,” a ministry spokesman said.

The Reuters news agency had quoted sources as saying in a report earlier in the day that a US delegation, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will meet with the Iranian representatives in Geneva on Tuesday morning.

Witkoff and Kushner had participated in a first round of indirect talks with an Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the Omani capital Muscat on February 6.

There has been no confirmation from Iranian and US officials about the reports.

The two announced Muscat as the venue of their first round of talks at the eleventh hour, days after reports suggested the talks would be held in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Switzerland has been representing the US interests in Iran since 1980, when the two countries cut off diplomatic relations.

The second round of talks will come after Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani travelled to Oman and Qatar, another Persian Gulf country involved in diplomatic efforts between Iran and the US, earlier this week.

Larijani said after the trips that negotiations with the US will continue, although he insisted that the Americans had yet to provide Iran with a concrete proposal.

AFP and Reuters said the US delegation will participate in separate talks with representatives from Russia and Ukraine, also in Geneva, on Tuesday afternoon.
