Iranian national Mahdieh Esfandiari has appeared in a Paris court on charges of promoting terrorism. She was arrested in February last year over her social media posts critical of the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
After four days of hearings marked by incidents and attacks by monarchist groups against Mahdieh’s supporters, the prosecutor requested a sentence of four years in prison, including one year without suspension, along with a permanent ban from French territory.
The verdict will be delivered on February 26th. For many, Mahdieh Esfandiari’s trial goes far beyond her individual case. They say the trial symbolizes a broader struggle over freedom of expression in France, including solidarity with Palestine.
