Tens of thousands of protesters staged a mass rally in Tel Aviv demanding a true inquiry into the October 7 retaliatory military operation by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

The protesters opposed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gathered at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square on Saturday, renewing their demand for establishing a fact-finding commission of inquiry to fully investigate the attack.

Led by members of the October Council and joined by freed captives and their families, they insisted that Netanyahu and his right-wing cabinet were attempting to block an honest investigation into the roots of the operation and the Israeli regime’s genocidal war on Gaza.

Former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett, opposition leader Yair Lapid, and lawmakers Benny Gantz, Gadi Eisenkot and Yair Golan attended the rally.

The rally organizers said in a statement that while Netanyahu’s cabinet was “rushing to create a political whitewash committee, the Israeli public is showing in massive numbers that its red lines have been crossed.”

Days ago, Netanyahu’s cabinet announced plans to form an “independent commission of inquiry with full investigative powers,” with a ministerial committee tasked with proposing the commission’s mandate within 45 days. The committee is expected to set the framework of the probe, define the premises of the inquiry, and limit the time period of the investigation.

The Israeli prime minister and his former war minister Yoav Gallant are wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and other crimes committed during the ongoing Israeli regime forces' genocidal war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Last week, Israel formally appealed to the ICC, demanding the removal of the chief prosecutor from the Gaza genocide case and the nullification of arrest warrants issued for Netanyahu and Gallant.

The Israeli foreign ministry claimed in a statement released on Monday that ICC’s chief prosecutor Karim Khan pursued Israel’s genocide case with “improper personal motives.”

It demanded the revocation of the arrest warrants issued by the court on November 21, 2024, at Khan’s request, against Netanyahu and Gallant.

The indictments include the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts committed during the regime’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, which, since October 7, 2023, has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians and wounded almost 180,000 more.
