UAE slams Israel’s 'expansionist ambitions' in West Bank annexation threat

A senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has warned that Israel’s threats to annex the occupied West Bank would cross a "red line."

Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE’s foreign ministry, told the UN General Assembly on Saturday that nothing could justify Israel's “pursuit of unacceptable expansionist ambitions, including the threat of annexing the West Bank.”

"Nothing can justify the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians from Gaza, as well as from the West Bank," she added.

Nusseibeh called for the implementation of a "two-state solution" to reach sustainable peace in the region. She reiterated that only Palestinian statehood can bring an end to Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Earlier this month, Abu Dhabi cautioned Tel Aviv that any move to annex the occupied West Bank would cross a “red line” and jeopardize diplomatic ties with Israel.

In 2020, the UAE became the first Arab country in 26 years to normalize relations with Israel under the so-called Abraham Accords.

Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 war and began establishing illegal  settlements there soon after.

Around 3 million Palestinians live in the occupied West Bank. The territory along with occupied al-Quds is a part of a future Palestinian state—a position supported by the UN and most of the international community.

Israel’s illegal settlements, however, have recently grown in size and number. In August, Tel Aviv approved a widely condemned settlement plan known as the E1 project, which would effectively divide the occupied West Bank and cut it off from al-Quds.

About 700,000 illegal Jewish settlers live among 2.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and al-Quds, which Israel annexed in a move not recognized by most countries.
