Arba'een commemoration
Millions of Muslims from across the globe are converging on the holy Iraqi City of Karbala to commemorate Arba’een, which marks 40 days since the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam. The solemn occasion is observed in Iran on Thursday and will be observed in Iraq the following day. For at least two weeks, pilgrims from different countries, including Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, have been arriving in Karbala for the event. Among them are over three million Iranian nationals. The Arba’een march is one of the largest annual religious congregations in the world. It sees large crowds of mourners travel on foot to Karbala, which hosts the shrine of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad. The Imam and a small group of his companions were martyred nearly fourteen centuries ago in the battle of Karbala, after they rose up against the Umayyad tyrant, Yazid.
US-Israeli genocide in Gaza
Israel’s indiscriminate air and artillery strikes kill more Palestinian civilians in Gaza, with starving aid seekers being the main target of the regime’s attacks. Nearly two dozen Palestinians were killed in attacks in various areas across Gaza since dawn. In one of the latest strikes, eight people lost their lives in Israeli bombing of a residential building in Gaza city. Five aid seekers also lost their lives in the IOF attacks near the aid distribution centers in Rafah. Gaza’s Government Media Office says the number of victims of famine and malnutrition has risen to two-hundred-39, including one-hundred-six children. The death toll from the Israeli genocide now exceeds 61-thousand-700, with more than 154-thousand-900 others injured.
Israel settlement expansion
More than one-hundred aid organizations call on Israel to stop weaponizing humanitarian relief as starvation in Gaza deepens. In a joint letter, the groups including Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders said they were increasingly blocked from delivering essential supplies unless they comply with tighter Israeli rules. They warned that aid groups risk being banned if they are seen as challenging Israel’s legitimacy or fail to disclose detailed information about Palestinian staff. The NGOs reported that vast quantities of relief supplies remain stranded in warehouses across Jordan and Egypt, urging immediate action to ensure the safe and unrestricted flow of aid to civilians. Their appeal comes as most of major NGOs have been unable to deliver a single truckload of aid into Gaza since early March.
