Two of Brazil's major oil trade union federations have urged President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to enforce an energy embargo on Israel in response to its atrocious military campaign against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The National Federation of Oil Workers and the Single Federation of Oil Workers have jointly signed a letter addressed to the Brazilian president and various ministers, calling on the government to adopt a stronger approach towards the genocidal war being waged against the impoverished Palestinian coastal sliver.

The federations stated that Brazil needs to take further action beyond merely issuing public statements and enforces a complete ban on oil sales to Israel, to effectively halt the “ongoing Nakba” – the Arabic term for catastrophe, which pertains to the ethnic cleansing and mass exodus of Palestinians in 1948.

The letter indicates that Brazil exported 2.7 million barrels of crude oil to the Israeli-occupied territories last year, which constitutes a substantial part of Tel Aviv's military fuel supply.

It noted that Brazil is obligated to prevent any involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity, as outlined by legal experts and international organizations, including the Oil Change International (OCI) NGO.

The signatories urged Brazil to “honor its diplomatic legacy, affirm its position on the right side of history, and ensure that its economic policies reflect its ethical and legal commitments to human rights and international law.”

The letter also commended actions implemented by various nations, such as Colombia's suspension of coal exports to the Israeli-occupied lands in the previous year.

President Lula has openly condemned the Gaza genocide and vehemently criticized the Israeli military's actions in the territory.

Earlier this week, the Chilean government declared its decision to withdraw all military, defense, and air force attaches from Tel Aviv as a form of protest against the ongoing war in Gaza.

A Chilean Foreign Ministry statement on May 28 said the decision is a result of “the extremely serious humanitarian situation currently experienced by the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.”

At least 54,381 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and another 124,054 individuals injured in the brutal Israeli military onslaught on Gaza since October 7, 2023.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the besieged coastal territory.
