US continues support for Israeli genocide in Gaza: Senior Hamas official
A senior official of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says the United States’ position is still to provide unrestricted support for Israel's killing of innocent Palestinians in Gaza as the Tel Aviv regime is pressing ahead with its genocidal war on the besieged territory.
Osama Hamdan, chief of Hamas’ Foreign relations and member of its political bureau said on Sunday that the US government’s positions vis-à-vis the war has provided the Israeli regime with the opportunity to continue its crimes in Gaza, according to Palestine's Sama news agency, citing Al Araby TV channel.
He further said that the Israeli regime is not looking for a ceasefire and therefore continues killing Palestinians by the use of "siege and hunger.”
Pointing to the truce talks, Hamdan said Hamas officials received a letter of invitation to visit the Egyptian capital Cairo and that he was surprised by some reports that allege a Hamas delegation being sent to deliver the movement's response.
The Hamas top official went on to say that the upcoming round of talks is set to take place in Cairo on Sunday and Monday, and that Hamas is seeking to achieve a result that fulfills the needs of the Palestinian nation.
Moreover in an interview with Al-Jazeera on Friday, Hamdan said that negotiations are not aimed at implementing what Israel wants, rather it is oriented towards putting an end to the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
“There is no detailed discussion of names or even numbers, and the focus is on a general framework until an agreement is reached on it,” he said.
The Hamas leader added that the US President Joe Biden is not a mediator, but rather a partner in the war and he may have bet on the Israelis to eliminate the resistance, but he failed.
Truce talks are expected to resume in Cairo on Sunday. However, the details beyond a possible six-week cessation of hostilities remain uncertain, despite assertions from US officials that Israel has “more or less accepted” a framework deal and a ceasefire is imminent.
About 130 of the 250 Israeli captives taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack are still in Gaza after a provisional truce deal in December saw the exchange of prisoners between the two sides.
The Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 30,410 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounded 71,533 others during the Gaza aggression.
