One killed as explosion hits mosque in Afghanistan’s Kunduz province

Afghanistan's Kunduz province

Local sources in Afghanistan’s Kunduz province say an explosion took place inside a mosque in the village of Al-Bardi in the Imam Sahib district of the province.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion took place while people were performing Friday prayer at the Alif Birdi mosque.

The exact number of casualties and the type of explosion are not yet known, but police said at least one worshipper has been killed and seven others wounded in the incident.

“The explosives were placed inside the mosque. The blast occurred when worshippers were offering Friday prayers,” provincial police spokesman Qari Obaidullah Abedi said.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Explosions have been a common occurrence in Afghanistan in recent months with Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group's resurgence in the country.

Last month, three deadly explosions tore through passenger vehicles in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif and a separate one hit a mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing several people.

Back in April, a powerful blast hit a mosque in western Kabul during prayers, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20 others.

The explosion went off on April 29 at the Khalifa Aga Gul Jan Mosque, where hundreds of worshipers had gathered for prayers on the last Friday of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

It, too, came after a series of explosions in Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, and Kunduz, causing a number of civilian casualties.
