Syria must return to Arab League in order for Arabs to unify again, Algeria’s president
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for restoration of Syria’s membership in the Arab League, stating that Arab nations would not be able to reunify and resolve their differences in case Damascus is excluded from the regional organization.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Tunisian counterpart, Kais Saied, in Tunis on Wednesday, Tebboune said Syria should rejoin the Arab League in order for Arabs to unify again, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported.
He added that no country has the right to interfere in the internal affairs of others, stating that there are no major differences among Arab states.
Tebboune said Algeria will stay away from discrimination and will not treat any country differently from others, when it hosts the Arab Summit in March 2022.
The Algerian president expressed hope that the forthcoming summit would foster harmony among Arab countries, warning against plots aimed at sowing division among Arabs.
Tebboune also stressed the need for political settlement of the Libyan conflict, saying foreign forces and their mercenaries must withdraw from the North African country.
Last month, the Algerian president hinted at the possibility of Syria’s return to the Arab League during the next Arab Summit.
"Syria is supposed to be present,” Tebboune told the state television when asked if the next Arab summit in Algeria will see Syria’s return to the Arab League.
He explained that the summit needs to be inclusive in order for the Arab world to be unified.
"When we organize an Arab summit, we want it to be inclusive and a launch pad for the reunification of the fractured Arab world,” Tebboune said, adding, “We are a country that always knits the splintered.”
In early March, Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Berwari renewed his country's call on the Arab League to end its suspension of the Syrian government’s membership in the 22-member body.
“Iraq has renewed its request concerning the restoration of Syria's membership in the Arab League as the country has great and fundamental importance for collective Arab measures,” he said on the sidelines of the 155th regular session of the Council of the Arab League at the foreign ministerial level.
The Arab League suspended Syria's membership in November 2011, citing alleged crackdown by Damascus on opposition protests. Syria has denounced the move as "illegal and a violation of the organization’s charter.”
Back on February 22, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein also called for Syria's membership to the Arab League to be restored. He made the remarks during a meeting with the secretary general of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council, Nayef bin Falah al-Hajraf, and his accompanying delegation in Baghdad at the time.
Syria was one of the six founding members of the Arab League in 1945.
