Nearly 20 people, mostly civilians, killed in car bomb attack in Syria’s Aleppo
Nearly 20 people, including children, have been killed and dozens more wounded when a car rigged with explosives went off in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, a monitor says.
The car bomb struck a bus and taxi station in the Turkish-controlled town of al-Bab on Saturday, killing 19 people, 13 of them civilians, and wounded 33 others, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the terrorist attack.
The city of al Bab was occupied by Turkish troops in February 2017 following the defeat of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the area.
Now part of Turkey’s so-called buffer zone, al-Bob is located some 30 kilometers northeast of Aleppo, the eponymous provincial capital.
Turkey has already blamed the car bombing on militants of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), against whom it launched a cross-border offensive into northeastern parts of Syria on October 9.
Kurdish militants “continue to target innocent civilians using the same methods as Daesh,” the Turkish Defense Ministry said on its official Twitter account on Saturday.
Ankara regards the US-backed YPG as being a terrorist organization tied to the homegrown Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group, which has been seeking an autonomous Kurdish region in the Anatolian country since 1984.
There was no immediate reaction from the YPG.
The Daesh Takfiri terrorist group has been crushingly defeated in Iraq and Syria and has lost all of its urban bastions in both Arab countries, but its remnants carry out sporadic attacks both on government soldiers and civilians alike.
The group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was allegedly killed in a US raid in northern Syria last month when he detonated his explosive vest after being cornered in a tunnel by approaching American Special Forces.
Daesh has named Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi as the new leader.
