This week, President Nicolas Maduro announced an official commemoration on the life of Hugo Chavez, who died on March 5, 2013. Despite today's economic difficulties, socialists say Chavez changed Venezuela's situation for the better. Demonstrations, music concerts, culture festivals and even the exposition of Chavez's former office have been staged as tribute. Chavez followers have pointed out QUOTE "We want to remember Chavez for the way he lived."

Despite the opposition claims that lots of money has been wasted by the government in this commemoration, the socialists dismiss such complaints and call on their followers to keep on with the commemoration for several more days.

The commemoration comes two years after Venezuelans were informed that then president Chavez had died.

Although the opposition says Hugo Chavez is now a myth rather than a real political force among his followers, there are still crowds in several spots of Caracas in response to President Maduro's call to commemorate the life and legacy of the late leader who they say still lives on in the hearts and minds of millions of his supporters.
