Iraqi media outlets have stopped using the word “Israel” to refer to the regime in Tel Aviv and use “the Zionist regime” instead in a move to show solidarity with Palestinians for some months, according to the head of the Commission of Media and Communications (CMC) in Iraq.

“Using the word ‘Israel’ has been banned in Iraqi media and instead the press and media must use ‘the Zionist regime’ or the ‘usurping Zionist regime’,” Ali Almuayid said in a meeting with an Iranian media delegation in Baghdad on Saturday.

“There had been pressure from the United States and some other countries to block the move, but it is now legal and being executed in Iraq,” he added.

Almuayid first announced the decision in January given the developments in the Gaza Strip and Israel’s war on the besieged territory which has killed at least 34,600 people so far.

He said at the time that the law was also in line with fulfilling human, religious, and ethical duty.

“Using the word ‘Israel’ could somehow legitimize the Zionist entity,” he added.

In May 2022, Iraq’s parliament passed a law making it illegal for the country ever to normalize its relations with the Zionist regime.

Elsewhere, in his remarks during the meeting with the Iranian delegation, Almuayid said that focusing on the Palestinian cause is “vital” and urged increased cooperation between Iranian and Iraqi media in this regard.

Looking ahead to an upcoming conference of Arab countries in the United Arab Emirates, Al-Muayad expressed plans to transform it into a major campaign advocating for Palestinian rights.

Farshad Mehdipour, a deputy minister for press and media campaigns at Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, headed the Iranian delegation, for his part proposed organizing a major event in Iraq, inviting pro-Palestinian media activists to use the potential of individuals and public opinion across Islamic countries.
