Members of the Iraqi parliament have called for the expulsion of the US ambassador from the country after Washington criticized an amended Iraqi law that criminalizes same-sex marriage.

A group of 61 Iraqi lawmakers signed a petition to the country’s foreign ministry urging the expulsion of Alina Romanowski and her replacement with a new envoy, according to a Sunday report by the al-Ahed news.

The lawmakers said the US had clearly interfered in Iraq’s internal affairs by being critical of parliamentary legislation passed on Saturday which aims to uphold Iraq’s religious values against same-sex relationships.

The petition said Iraq will not accept interference from the US and other embassies of Western countries in Iraq while urging the Iraqi judiciary to implement the law without submitting to pressure.

Romanowski reposted a statement from the US State Department on Saturday which had criticized the Iraqi Council of Representatives for passing an amendment to the Anti-Prostitution and Homosexuality Law.

The amended law imposes a maximum of 15-year prison sentence on people involved in same-sex marriage.
