Iranian students win four medals and honors at 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics
Iran’s national informatics team has won four distinctions at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2026) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, continuing the country’s strong run of performances in major international science competitions.
The Iranian team secured two silver medals, one bronze medal and one honorable mention at the prestigious competition, which was held from August 9 to 16 with the participation of top young computer science talents from more than 97 countries.
The four-member Iranian team was represented by Hamed Ghaffari Aghdas and Arash Ostad-Sharif Memar, who each won a silver medal, while Mohammad Shayan claimed a bronze medal and Bahamin Shafaghi received an honorable mention.
The results add to a series of strong international performances by Iranian students in recent months, highlighting the country’s continued presence among leading nations in academic Olympiads.
Earlier this month, Iran’s national team at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the third edition of the competition.
Iranian students also delivered an outstanding performance at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2026), held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4 to 12.
The team won three gold and two silver medals at the competition, which brought together more than 400 high school students from over 90 countries.
In mathematics, Iran’s national team won the championship title at the fourth International Mathematics Competition of Shanghai (IMSC 2026), finishing first among 49 teams with four gold and two silver medals, ahead of Poland and Brazil.
Iran has likewise maintained a strong record at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
At the 66th edition of the competition in Australia in 2025, the Iranian team ranked 12th worldwide after winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal, improving on its 19th-place finish the previous year.
The country also recorded a notable result at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025) in the Philippines, where Iranian students won three gold medals and one silver, placing Iran second overall among 81 participating countries.
