Hezbollah not to allow implementation of US-backed agreement on Lebanon: Lawmaker

A Lebanese lawmaker says the country's Hezbollah resistance movement will not allow implementation of a United States-backed so-called "framework agreement" that purports to be seeking "dismantling" of the group.

Hassan Fadlallah, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance Block, made the remarks to Lebanon's al-Mayadeen network on Friday.

Hezbollah would "cling more" to its resistance and its weapons, he said, stressing that the movement's opposition was "serious" and that it would not allow implementation of the so-called agreement, which was announced by the US State Department earlier in the day.

The agreement "will not pass," he added, urging Lebanese authorities to "withdraw" from negotiations and rescind "all decisions taken against the Lebanese people" in connection with the negotiations.

'No one can cancel hostility towards Israel'

He also argued that direct talks with the Israeli regime violate Article 52 of the Lebanese constitution, adding, "No individual has the right to cancel the state of hostility towards Israel."

Addressing Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly, Fadlallah said, "Do not rush to deliver good news to your people."

Hezbollah, he added, would not allow destruction of Lebanon and surrendering of the country's fate.

"The important factor is the battlefield" and Hezbollah "owns the battlefield," the legislator noted.

Fadlallah, meanwhile, warned that forcible implementation of the agreement would not be possible unless through triggering of a "civil war" with Washington's support.

The official said the Washington-backed deal is aimed at "derailing" attempts at bringing about an end to Israeli aggression against Lebanon as part of a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding that was recently signed between Iran and the United States.

The Islamic Republic has insisted on cessation of aggression on all fronts, including Lebanon, in line with the first clause of the MoU.

Iran's position "is clear," the lawmaker added, reminding that the Islamic Republic has asserted that it would not sign any final agreement with the US as long as the Israeli regime kept its troops in Lebanon.
