A nationwide poll in the United States has found that President Donald Trump’s approval rating is near a record low as his party fights to remain in control of Congress.

According to the poll, conducted by Reuters/Ipsos and released on Monday, only 32% approve of Trump’s job in office. The result is just above his record-low approval rating of 31% last week. The findings come from a survey of 1,765 American adults.

Fifty percent of registered independent voters said they saw their vote as a vote against Trump. In contrast, 13% said their vote was for him.

Among those polled, 33% said the US president had no influence on the vote they were going to cast.

Trump himself asked his supporters in South Carolina at a rally in support of Senator Darline Graham to pretend that his name was on the ballot.

“The problem that we have is, they say that Trump does great when he’s on the ballot, but when he’s not on the ballot, his people don’t come, and they don’t vote for senators, congressmen and other Republicans,” Trump claimed.

Trump's approval rating has fallen near record lows largely because the war against Iran has driven up energy costs and inflation, directly undercutting his core promise to make life more affordable for Americans.

As the election is widely expected to favor Democrats, the Trump administration has tried to intervene in the election process in multiple states.

The administration claims that more than 20,000 suspected non-US citizens were identified on California’s voter rolls, prompting Trump to ask the Supreme Court to have their names removed. The US Supreme Court quickly rejected the request on Monday.

Democrats appear to be more enthusiastic about voting as they hope to take control of Congress, with 49% saying they are “very enthusiastic” about voting in the election, compared with 33% of Republicans.

The poll results show that a Republican victory is not going to be easy, as the prices of goods and fuel have risen since Trump’s illegal war on Iran in February.

Forty-six percent of voters said they preferred Democrats over Republicans, while 38% wanted a Republican-controlled Congress.

Seventy-eight percent of voters said the rising cost of living would be a very important or the most important issue in deciding how to vote. When asked which party was better on the issue, 43% voters in the poll chose Democrats over Republicans, with 32%.

As of today, more than 57 million ballots have been cast, according to CNN. Democrats and Republicans are in a close race, and the final result depends on key swing states. The numbers are up from 45 million in all of the 2022 midterms.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 US Senate seats will be contested on Tuesday.
