A cyberattack targeting supermarket refrigeration systems has spread across Europe, disrupting stores in Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg and forcing retailers to discard large quantities of spoiled food.
The attack, reported on Monday, November 2, affected major supermarket chains including Ahold Delhaize, Colruyt, ICA and Coop, as well as at least one IKEA store. The breach caused temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to rise, compromising food supplies at dozens of locations.
In Belgium, employees at a Delhaize supermarket in Tourinnes-Saint-Lambert were forced to dispose of spoiled products, with the store manager describing the incident as deeply distressing.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which echoes a similar incident in France last month. Belgian cybersecurity officials say the perpetrators may never be identified, while warning of a growing number of cyber incidents, partly linked to the use of artificial intelligence.
The European Commission has also warned that digital threats are increasingly capable of disrupting essential services and infrastructure, raising concerns over Europe’s cybersecurity preparedness.
