A week after beating former strongman Aleksandar Vucic in an election, Serbia's students and thousands of their supporters on Sunday marked two years since a train station tragedy in the country's north that gave birth to their movement.
The Nov. 1, 2024 collapse of a concrete canopy at the railway station in the city of Novi Sad killed 16 people. A demand for accountability over the deaths fuelled two years of youth-led protests that eventually led to the defeat of Vucic's government at the parliamentary vote last Sunday.
Thousands of people marched in silence to the Novi Sad railway station to pay their respects for the victims. Unlike a year ago, when huge crowds gathered for the first anniversary of the tragedy, participants this year said they had hope that those responsible for the disaster will be punished.
Many in Serbia believe that the concrete canopy crash happened because of flawed renovation work at the station building that was caused by corruption and negligence in major state infrastructure projects championed by Vucic's government.
