Iran has presented evidence of US-Israeli attacks on its maritime infrastructure to the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO), warning that damage to ports, vessels and navigation facilities could put international shipping at risk across key waterways in West Asia.
Iran’s Port and Maritime Organization has compiled official records and photographs documenting the impact of the attacks on its maritime facilities.
According to the official news agency IRNA, the documents have been formally circulated among IMO member states under Agenda Item 11, titled “Protection of Vital Shipping Lanes,” for review at the organization's 138th Council session in London on November 2–6.
The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating international shipping and promoting maritime safety, security, and the prevention of marine pollution.
The report, titled War Crimes Against Iran’s Ports and Maritime Infrastructure, documents damage to civilian maritime facilities since the joint US-Israeli war of aggression against the country in late February 2026.
Among the sites documented are port installations, search and rescue centers and emergency-response vessels. Images included in the submission illustrate the extent of the damage.
Iranian authorities say the consequences extend well beyond the affected facilities, warning that disruption to navigation and maritime traffic management could leave vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman more vulnerable to collisions and other accidents.
The loss of rescue infrastructure could also hamper responses to maritime emergencies, potentially putting crews, including foreign seafarers, in danger.
The submission further raises concerns about wider environmental damage, pointing to the risks associated with attacks on oil installations, storage facilities and vessels.
The report warns that any resulting pollution could spread beyond the sites directly affected, threatening marine ecosystems and coastal communities across the region.
Iran says the damage to its maritime infrastructure therefore poses risks not only to its own maritime operations but also to the safety of international shipping and the wider marine environment.
The attacks on civilian maritime infrastructure are part of a broader pattern of US military aggression targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
Iranian armed forces have repeatedly warned Washington against provocative actions that threaten maritime security and endanger the livelihoods of communities along the country's coastline.
