US knows any high-intensity conflict with Iran would be a peer-level war: Analyst

Author and university professor George Katsiaficas says US military drills of digging mass graves on the battlefield indicate that Washington is contemplating the possibility of a large-scale ground conflict with Iran.

He says the training reflects an acknowledgment by the US military that any confrontation with Iran would be a high-intensity, peer-level conflict, underscoring Tehran’s military capabilities and raising the potential costs of war for Washington.

Katsiaficas describes the prospect of renewed US military action against Iran as reckless, warning that American forces could face heavy casualties in any ground operation, particularly given Iran’s mountainous terrain, defensive fortifications, and advanced weapons systems. He contends that preparations for handling large numbers of fatalities suggest military planners are anticipating significant losses should a conflict escalate.

The analyst further argues that US efforts to prepare for battlefield casualties expose the risks associated with a broader military campaign against Iran, maintaining that many American troops could be killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing in action.
