Iran’s freestyle wrestling team celebrated a double gold-medal triumph at the World Championships in Astana, with Ahmad Mohammadnejad Javan and Amirhossein Zare claiming titles in the 61kg and 125kg weight classes.

The two Iranians delivered commanding performances in Saturday’s finals, overcoming Russian opponents to add two more world titles to Iran’s tally.

At 61kg, Javan booked his place in the final after a series of hard-fought victories. Following a first-round bye, the Iranian edged India's Nikhil 10-9 before overcoming US wrestler Marcus Blaze 3-2 in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Kazakhstan's Asyl Aitakin 3-1 in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Uguev.

The final proved to be a different story from their 2025 world championship encounter, which Uguev had won. Javan controlled the contest this time, securing an impressive 9-2 victory over the Russian Olympic and world champion to claim the gold medal.

Zare, meanwhile, enjoyed an even more dominant campaign at 125kg. After receiving a first-round bye, the Iranian heavyweight opened his campaign with an 11-0 victory over India's Jaspuran Singh. He followed that with another technical superiority win, defeating Jamaica's Aaron Johnson 10-0 in the quarterfinals.

Zare maintained his momentum in the semifinals, shutting out US wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson by the same 10-0 scoreline to reach the final. He then completed his campaign with an emphatic 11-0 victory over Russia's Abdulla Kurbanov.

The Iranian heavyweight thus finished the tournament with four victories and not a single point conceded, adding another world title to a career that already includes multiple world championships and Olympic silver and bronze medals.

The double triumph added to Iran’s medal haul following the bronze-medal performances of Hassan Yazdani at 97kg and Rahman Amouzad at 65kg on the previous day.

The 2026 World Championships are being held at Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1, with freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling competitions featuring the world's leading wrestlers.

Iran’s Greco-Roman team earlier claimed the team title with a whopping nine medals in 10 weight categories.
