A Palestinian journalist who works as a correspondent for Iran’s Tasnim News Agency has been released after 15 months of detention in Israel’s Damon Prison, where she endured mistreatment and torture.
Farah Abu Ayyash was abducted on August 6, 2025, and was released on Thursday night following 15 months in administrative detention, after the Ofer Prison military court ordered her release and dismissed the charges against her.
The 24-year-old Palestinian journalist was abducted in a nighttime raid by Israeli forces from her home in Beit Ummar, north of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.
Farah’s arrest was tied to her journalistic work covering local developments across the southern West Bank for Tasnim.
Mohammed Abu Ayyash, Farah’s father, told the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) that Israeli forces had raided the house, searched and ransacked it, and abducted his daughter. He also said that Israeli forces had raided several other homes in the area.
The journalist’s legal case was postponed multiple times by the Israeli authorities, resulting in her being held under administrative detention in Israel’s Damon Prison.
Tasnim reported that she was repeatedly abused and tortured during her detention. She was slapped, cornered by military dogs that tore her pants, and hit several times by Israeli forces. She was also forced to remove her hijab.
“Israel has eliminated the witnesses, controlled the information, incited hatred and relied on others to repeat its story. The result is what I call ‘mediacide’: the systematic destruction of the media’s public function,” The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese, stated in a report released by the UN on October 9.
Since October 2023, when the occupying regime waged its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces have killed around 300 journalists and wounded more than 400. This is considered the deadliest attack on journalists and media workers.
“Journalists in Gaza know that documenting the destruction of their own society may cost them their lives and their families’ [lives]. Yet they keep reporting,” Albanese said.
