Tens of thousands of workers and students have taken to the streets across Italy in a nationwide strike to demand higher wages, better public services and measures to address the rising cost of living, while voicing opposition to increased military spending.
The 24-hour general strike, called by grassroots union Unione Sindacale di Base, was accompanied by demonstrations in more than 40 cities on Friday.
In Milan, protesters marched onto the city's ring road before heading to the Politecnico di Milano university, with some demonstrators carrying flares and setting objects on fire.
In Rome, demonstrators marched with flags and banners as riot police monitored the rally. Some protesters said they intended to pitch tents and remain on the streets throughout the weekend.
In Naples, demonstrators hung a banner reading, "You don't change things with good manners," on a fountain in Piazza Garibaldi.
The nationwide mobilization comes amid a broader wave of protests across Europe, including in France, Spain, Belgium and Albania, where workers and other sections of society have raised concerns over the cost of living and economic pressures.
The demonstrations underscore growing public discontent over living costs, wages and government spending priorities.
