The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has dismantled two terrorist cells in southeastern Iran, arresting their members over plans to carry out major attacks in the region bordering Pakistan.

The IRGC Ground Forces' Quds Headquarters, which oversees security along Iran’s southeastern borders, said in a statement on Tuesday that the terrorist cells had been operating in the cities of Saravan and Iranshahr in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

It said the arrests were carried out in pre-dawn raids on the groups’ hideouts, based on intelligence gathered by Iran’s intelligence network.

The statement added that the groups had planned to carry out several terrorist operations in Iranshahr and Saravan, two cities located about 350 kilometers apart along the road to the Iran-Pakistan border.

The IRGC said the terrorist cells were backed by the US and the Israeli regime, warning that those working with them would face severe consequences.

“... Mercenaries of the United States and the Zionist regime are warned that the fate of serving the enemy is death and destruction,” it said.

Iranian security forces have foiled a growing number of terrorist plots in border areas since earlier this year, when the US and Israeli regime launched a war of aggression against the country.

US and Israeli officials have openly voiced support for potential insurgency in Iran’s border regions.

Iranian authorities say intelligence-led operations, military action and growing public support for the government in border regions have helped foil most enemy plots.
