Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, have met on the sidelines of the 8th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Moscow, where the two leaders discussed ways to expand bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation in the energy sector.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the latest status of relations between Tehran and Doha and underscored the importance of expanding political and economic ties, as well as utilizing existing capacities to elevate the level of mutual cooperation.
According to a readout from the Iranian Presidency, cooperation in the energy sector, the development of economic and trade exchanges, and strengthening coordination among gas-exporting countries were among the key topics discussed during the talks.
President Pezeshkian is visiting Russia to participate in the 8th GECF summit, where he is scheduled to deliver a speech.
On the sidelines of the event, he will also hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and several other participating heads of state to discuss the development of trade and economic cooperation.
Before leaving Tehran on Monday, Pezeshkian said Iran would use its position in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) to help improve the current situation in the international energy market.
He said the US-Israeli aggression against Iran earlier this year and the continued support of the US and its European allies for Israel’s destabilizing actions in West Asia had made regional energy transit routes insecure.
The Iranian president said he and other leaders of the GECF, a bloc that accounts for more than 70% of global natural gas supplies, would discuss these security concerns at their summit in Moscow.
