US Senator Chris Van Hollen has renewed calls for accountability over the killings of nine American citizens by Israeli settlers or security forces in the West Bank since 2022, including Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

In a video posted on X on Tuesday, Van Hollen listed the victims as 70-year-old Omar Assad, 51-year-old Abu Akleh, 17-year-old Tawfic Abdel Jabbar, 17-year-old Mohammad Khdour, 26-year-old Aysenur Eygi, 14-year-old Amer Rabee, 20-year-old Saif Musallet, 40-year-old Khamis Ayyad, and 19-year-old Nasrallah Abu Siyam.

Abu Akleh, a prominent reporter, was killed on May 11, 2022, while covering an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Investigations by the United Nations, CNN, The New York Times, and Al Jazeera all concluded that Abu Akleh was killed — likely deliberately — by Israeli troops.

Von Hollen noted that “the US must end its complicity in the injustice of the occupation and demand accountability for the 9 Americans killed.”

Last month, the Senate blocked a resolution that would have given the State Department 30 days to report to Congress on those deaths and on wider human rights conditions in the territory.

Meanwhile, US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has warned that Palestinians will continue to face Israeli oppression regardless of the outcome of Israel’s upcoming parliamentary elections, calling for a comprehensive arms embargo and sanctions against the regime.

“Regardless of which war criminal becomes prime minister, Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid will continue to face genocide, land theft, and erasure,” Tlaib said in a Tuesday post on X.

“We cannot accept lies, excuses, or half-measures from our leaders. We must impose a full arms embargo and sanctions until Palestine is free,” she added.

Her remarks come as Israel prepares to hold parliamentary elections on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeking re-election against an opposition bloc led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot.

The vote is Israel’s first parliamentary election since October 7, 2023, and takes place amid continued Israeli military attacks in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.
