A mass shooting has left 12 people injured, including six children, in Tallahassee, Florida.

Eleven of the 12 victims had sustained gunshot wounds, three of which were serious, according to the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD).

TPD said in a statement that one of the victims who is in serious condition is a child. The others, it added, are in stable condition.

At a press conference on Sunday, TPD Chief Lawrence Revell described the mass shooting to reporters as an "altercation."

“Our preliminary information shows that an altercation occurred between individuals,” he said, adding that it was “an isolated incident between two or three individuals.”

Revell said no arrests had been made yet. “Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people who are responsible for this to justice,” Revell added.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about the incident to contact authorities.

US university begins academic year with mass shooting

The incident occurred during Florida A&M University's Homecoming Week, as students and alumni gathered in Tallahassee for the annual celebrations.

Florida A&M University said the campus was safe. However, it urged people to avoid the area.

The shooting took place at around 8 p.m. (12 a.m. GMT) just hours after a homecoming football game at the stadium, where Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions beat Florida A&M Rattlers 31-28.

It’s unclear whether the shooting was connected to the game. However, Florida A&M University explained that the violence occurred outside its campus area.

“We’re still working the scene. Our detectives, our sergeants, our forensic personnel are all on scene and processing this as we go, taking in as much information as they can,” Revell said.

“As our detectives work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible, we remain committed to getting answers for these families.”

Gun violence and mass shootings are a common phenomenon in the United States, with hundreds of fatal attacks on the public, including children and students, reported each year.

US government officials, including members of Congress, have repeatedly ignored calls by gun control advocacy groups for greater weapons controls in the country.
