Austrian students march against university funding cuts

Thousands of students take to the streets of the Austrian capital, to protest planned 2028 cuts to higher education and science funding.

Thousands of university students marched through central Vienna to protest cuts to funding for higher education and science, due to take effect in 2028.

At least 30,000 people attended the rally, police said.

"It affects our opportunities to learn and our tertiary education sector as a whole, and we will know that we are receiving a worse education," says one protester.

The protest follows a decision to keep funding for Austria’s 23 public universities at 16 billion euros between 2028 and 2030, despite rectors estimating that at least 18 billion euros would be needed to maintain current resources amid inflation and rising costs.
