Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf reiterated that a permanent ceasefire with the United States hinges on Washington meeting Iran’s seven conditions, which Tehran has already conveyed.
Qalibaf made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday with Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose country has mediated between Tehran and Washington in recent months.
Qalibaf told Munir that US President Donald Trump’s lack of commitment to the Islamabad MoU has exacerbated Iran's historical mistrust toward the US.
“It was the United States that, with miscalculations and a war against Iran, got stuck in the quagmire, and now it is they who must take the necessary steps to get out,” he said.
Under the 14-point Islamabad MoU, signed by the Iranian and US presidents in June, Washington is required to end the war on all fronts and lift its illegal blockade and sanctions on Iran in return for Tehran’s gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran brought the strategic Persian Gulf waterway under its control in the early days of the US-Israeli aggression against the country in March.
The senior lawmaker dismissed US and Israeli threats to resume aggression against Iran, saying the country won’t back off from its conditions to end the war and is ready to put up a massive defense in the face of renewed aggression.
“We are not warmongers, but we are fully prepared to defend our homeland and our national dignity; threats and military moves cannot influence the strategic decisions of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.
Meanwhile, Munir told Qalibaf that Pakistan had lifted the closure of its borders with Iran, describing the move as an interim decision prompted by technical issues.
