In his appointment decree on Tuesday, Pezeshkian tasked General Ibn al-Reza with drawing on the expertise of specialists and providing effective policy advice to help advance the government’s defense objectives and address the challenges the country faces.
Ibn al-Reza had served as deputy minister of defense and armed forces logistics since August 2025.

On October 18, Mehrdad Akhlaghi received a vote of confidence from Iran’s Parliament and was appointed defense minister.
General Ibn al-Reza is a injured veteran of Iraq’s imposed war of the 1980s on Iran. He has a long career in the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). Before becoming deputy minister of defense, he held several positions, including a management role at the Social Security Organization of the Armed Forces.
During his tenure, Ibn al-Reza worked on strengthening Iran’s defense capabilities through the development of ballistic missiles and drones.
