Civil society organisations and social movements have staged a protest outside Meta’s headquarters in São Paulo, demanding answers over alleged interference in Brazil’s elections.
The demonstration comes amid growing controversy over claims that Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have treated presidential candidates unequally in the final days of the campaign.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s coalition says his Instagram account and posts were restricted, while local newspaper Folha de S.Paulo has reported internal Meta messages acknowledging the restrictions and indicating that the platform recommended Senator Jair Bolsonaro’s profile and WhatsApp channel to users.
Meta has attributed the issue to global technical glitches, denying any political bias and rejecting claims that it favours either side.
Lula is set to face Bolsonaro in a runoff on October 25, following the senator’s stronger-than-expected performance in the first round earlier this month.
