A Palestinian prisoners’ advocacy group says Israeli prison guards have forcibly removed the headscarves of female Palestinian detainees, physically assaulted them, and fired tear gas into their cells and bathing areas.
In a report issued on Monday, the Asra Media Office (AMO) said the abuse had caused health problems among several detainees, including a pregnant woman.
The rights group said an Israeli police officer forced female Palestinian detainees to remove their headscarves for hair inspections and undo their braids, before placing 17 of them in solitary confinement.
The group denounced the incident as a “violation of their privacy.”
The AMO noted that Israeli soldiers made several inmates lie face down on the ground for an hour, beat them and then led them into cells filled with tear gas.
Prison guards also sprayed pepper spray into a room holding 15 female detainees, including elderly women, causing several to vomit.
According to the group, one detainee had to be removed from the room after fainting, while another was left unable to walk.
The AMO called for immediate action to protect Palestinian women detainees from abuse and violations in Israeli prisons and ensure they receive the medical care they need.
Thousands of Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons, where human rights organizations have repeatedly documented violations of detainees’ rights under the Geneva Conventions.
Palestinian detainees are held in Israeli prisons under dire conditions, facing inadequate sanitation, systematic abuse, intimidation, and other forms of mistreatment.
The Palestine Detainees Studies Center says around 60 percent of Palestinians held in Israeli detention suffer from chronic health conditions, with some dying in custody or shortly after their release due to the severity of their illnesses.
