A woman has died after being swept away while attempting to cross a river amid torrential rains in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, bringing the death toll from heavy rain and flooding across the country over the past 15 days to five, authorities said on Sunday.
The 35-year-old woman was swept away in Cabrera de Mar, north of Barcelona, on Saturday night as she attempted to cross a river with her children, despite warnings to stay away from waterways. Rescuers recovered her body from the sea on Sunday.
Heavy downpours on Saturday battered several regions, particularly Catalonia and Almeria in the south, as well as Valencia and Alicante in the southeast. Floodwaters inundated homes, swept away vehicles and forced road closures.
The latest flooding follows a series of extreme weather events in Spain, where torrential rains and landslides have claimed lives, following weeks of record-high temperatures that fueled devastating wildfires.
