Iran's Qalibaf says the country will impose checks and controls on the flow of data in the region.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf says the country will set up a new authority to control the regional flow of digital data amid war with the US, which has also led Tehran to control cargo traffic in the Persian Gulf.

In a Sunday post on his X account, Qalibaf suggested that the planned regional data flow control system will be like the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a body set up by Iran after the US-Israeli aggression against the country early this year to control shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Persian Gulf Data Authority is coming. To governments, funds, and firms in the region: you are kindly advised to give no resources to any AI or data company aiding invasions or killing children," he said in the post.

The post comes after repeated warnings by officials that Iran would expand its measures to force the United States to lift its maritime blockade on the country and permanently end the aggression.

Authorities have indicated that the measures could include attacks on data transfer infrastructure in the Persian Gulf either owned or shared by major US companies.

Iran carried out limited attacks on data centers run by US companies in regional countries during the 39-day US-Israeli aggression that ended in mid-April. The attacks were in response to US and Israeli attacks on banking data and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Iran.

Qalibaf warned regional countries that aiding the US and its subsidiary internet and data companies could expose them to harsh Iranian retaliation.

"No finance, equity, land and energy…Assist them and face our enforcement," he said.
