California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for setting conditions on US military aid to the Israeli regime.

"Aid has to be conditioned," Newsom, who is campaigning in New Hampshire ahead of next month's midterm elections and a potential 2028 presidential run, said on Saturday in an interview with the Washington Examiner.

He said US aid should advance human rights principles, including under the Leahy framework -- a 1997 federal rule prohibiting the US government from funding foreign military units linked to "credible information" of severe human rights violations.

Gavin also denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the numerous atrocities in past years against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

He said Netanyahu's crimes had led to the complete isolation of the occupying regime.

"Bibi Netanyahu has done a remarkable job of really isolating himself from the rest of the world and increasingly from the American people," Newsom said. "The damage he's done is incalculable."

The politician also described the ongoing Israeli genocidal war on Gaza as a "moral catastrophe."

His remarks come amid growing Democratic opposition to providing US arms and ammunition to the Israeli regime.

Most Senate Democrats, as well as more than 100 House Democrats, have voted in favor of stopping the supply of US weaponry by Washington to Tel Aviv.

California's Governor has previously slammed Netanyahu for the increased atrocities against Palestinians while calling Israel an "apartheid" regime.

The Californian politician has also denounced Trump for ordering a heavy-handed crackdown on Anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) demonstrations in Los Angeles in 2025.

Newsom likened Trump's actions to those of a “dictator” during anti-ICE protests across America.

Newsom wrote on X in June 2015 that Trump was “Inciting and provoking violence. Creating mass chaos. Militarizing cities. Arresting opponents. These are acts of a dictator, not a President.”
