Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to strengthen solidarity among Muslim countries and take a more active role in addressing shared challenges, particularly the issue of the occupied Palestinian territories.
Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with OIC Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Saturday, where the two officials discussed issues affecting the Islamic world and matters on the organization’s agenda.
The Iranian foreign minister congratulated Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his appointment as secretary-general and stressed the importance of coordinated action by OIC member states in confronting common challenges and threats, particularly those related to the occupied Palestinian territories.
Araghchi also called for the OIC secretariat to maintain a professional and impartial approach in its work, saying Iran expected the organization to promote understanding and solidarity among its members without creating perceptions of bias in favor of or against any member state.
Referring to Iran’s status as one of the OIC’s founding members, he emphasized the need for the secretariat to operate in a way that strengthens trust and cooperation across the organization.
The officials also discussed developments in the Arabian Peninsula and the escalation of regional conflicts.
During the meeting, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s willingness to help create opportunities for dialogue and engagement between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
For his part, Ould Cheikh Ahmed thanked Araghchi for attending the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting and expressed the secretariat’s interest in drawing on Iran’s experience and capabilities to develop new initiatives for mediation and the peaceful resolution of disputes among Muslim countries.
The meeting took place as foreign ministers from OIC member states gathered in Baghdad for the organization’s annual Council of Foreign Ministers session, which provides a forum for discussing political developments and cooperation across the Islamic world.
