Iran says ready to mediate Saudi-Yemen dispute, rejects allegations of involvement

Iran says it is ready to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Yemen if both sides request its assistance, while rejecting allegations of involvement in Yemeni military operations and calling for dialogue, respect for Yemen’s sovereignty and an end to the blockade.

Iran is ready to use its diplomatic capacity to help resolve differences between Saudi Arabia and Yemen if both sides request it, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said, strongly rejecting allegations that Tehran has played a role in Yemeni retaliatory operations.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Baghaei outlined Iran’s position on the Saudi-Yemeni conflict and reiterated Tehran’s principled stance that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been ready to use its good offices to help bring the conflict to an end, and remains prepared to use all its capacities for this purpose if requested by both sides,” he said.

Referring to the history of the war between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Baghaei said developments over the past 12 years had demonstrated that foreign intervention, military aggression and blockade were not solutions to Yemen’s problems.

“For more than a decade, the Yemeni people have resisted the country’s air and sea blockade and patiently endured the consequences of this unjust blockade, which was designed by actors from outside the region, particularly Britain and the United States,” he said.

Baghaei said regional countries and the broader Islamic world were expected to make serious efforts to bring the situation to an end.

He also rejected allegations by a Saudi Foreign Ministry official that Iran had encouraged Yemenis to attack Saudi Arabia.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran rejects any claim regarding its role in Yemeni operations,” Baghaei said, stressing that resolving the Yemen issue required respect for the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, an end to all interference in its internal affairs and, most importantly, the lifting of the air and sea blockade.

Baghaei said Yemen’s armed forces acted according to their own interests and assessments. Meanwhile, he added that Iran did not consider an escalation of tensions to be in the interests of any party.

In the meantime, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh told Al Mayadeen on Friday that Tehran had offered Saudi Arabia to help mediate the dispute but had yet to receive a positive response.

“Today, our foreign minister and our government have offered any kind of assistance — mediation assistance, of course — but so far we have not received any positive response,” he said.

Yemeni armed forces report 101 Saudi airstrikes and missile attacks in 24 hours

The remarks come as Yemen’s armed forces said Saudi warplanes had carried out 101 airstrikes and missile attacks against civilian targets over the previous 24 hours, striking the capital, Sana’a, and the provinces of al-Dhalea, Taizz, Hudaydah, Dhamar, Marib, Sa’ada, al-Jawf, Amran and Lahij.

In a statement, the forces said the attacks involved F-15 and Typhoon aircraft that took off from the Khamis Mushait and Taif air bases, as well as missile attacks launched from Najran. They said the attacks had killed and wounded civilians, including women and children.

The statement put the total number of Saudi attacks against Yemen since the start of the escalation at 2,489 airstrikes and missile attacks.

The Sana’a administration announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia on July 20, in retaliation for “an unjust and oppressive siege” on Yemen that has continued for almost 12 years.

The Yemeni military has reported multiple successful operations targeting ships associated with Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies enacted a blockade on Yemen and initiated a large-scale military campaign, with support from the United States and various Western nations in terms of military, political, and logistical resources.

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Yemenis. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia has not succeeded in achieving its goal of restoring a puppet government that aligns with its interests.
