The Yemeni armed forces launched a fresh ballistic missile attack against Riyadh’s international airport, the latest in a series of strikes targeting the facility since the weekend.

“The Yemeni armed forces… were able to target King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi enemy’s capital, Riyadh, with a ballistic missile, and the hit was accurate,” Army spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement on Wednesday.

The airport, Saudi Arabia’s second-busiest after Jeddah, has been effectively shut down since a Yemeni missile attack on the facility killed at least 13 people and wounded hundreds of others on Saturday.

The Yemeni armed forces have since warned international airlines and travelers that all Saudi airports except those in Mecca and Medina are “unsafe” and should be avoided.

Saree said in his statement that gatherings of Saudi-backed forces in the Ras al-Ara and al-Mudarabah were also struck with three ballistic missiles. The hits were accurate and left a large number of enemy forces dead and wounded and damaged several vehicles, he added.

The latest escalation in Yemen began after Saudi Arabia bombed Sana’a’s international airport in mid-July.

The Yemeni armed forces responded by attacking Saudi airports, oil facilities and tankers, marking some of the deadliest attacks on the kingdom in over a decade.

They have also enforced a “blockade for blockade” policy and declared an embargo on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea.

The Yemeni forces seized Yemen’s Red Sea coast in a lightning offensive, taking control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait — a strategic chokepoint for global trade and a key export route for Saudi oil.
