Student protests in Albania turned violent overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, with demonstrators smashing shop windows and rioting as police used tear gas to disperse the crowds.
Students joined an anti-government movement known as Flamingo, which is calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over allegations of widespread corruption.
Police said 23 people were detained, while six officers and one journalist were injured.
Tuesday’s rally against a luxury development project linked to US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, quickly turned violent.
Dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution” after protesters used signs depicting the pink bird, which they say could be threatened by the coastal development, the anti-government demonstrations have shaken Albania.
Albanian officials have given few details about Kushner’s role in the project. However, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, has spoken about her family’s involvement in the venture, describing it as an “incredible project.”
