Iran will respond within the next few days to the US response to Tehran’s seven-day proposal aimed at restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz and advancing negotiations, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says.
Araghchi told reporters on Thursday that “the indirect negotiating process is still continuing and messages are being exchanged through mediators.”
“We are currently reviewing the Americans’ views, and I think we will provide our response within the next few days,” the foreign minister added.
Iran presented the proposal during the UN General Assembly in New York last month, offering a seven-day process under which the Strait of Hormuz could return to normal if Washington took specified steps.
Araghchi later explained that the plan envisaged the waterway reopening on the sixth day, followed by the resumption of negotiations on the seventh day.
The proposal also called for an end to the war on all fronts, the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports and the release of frozen Iranian funds and assets.
The US response was conveyed to Iran through mediators, with Tehran subsequently reviewing Washington’s position.
Iranian officials have revealed that the main dispute concerns the sequence in which the proposed measures should be carried out, rather than the basic components of the plan.
Araghchi has repeatedly stressed that Tehran remains open to diplomacy while preparing for any renewed military confrontation.
“We should not miss any chance for peace,” he said in a recent interview, while maintaining that Iran would resist any new aggression.
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the latest round of US-Israeli aggression, preventing US and allied ships from navigating the strategic waterway.
The move resulted in a significant increase in oil and energy prices across the globe, especially in the US, forcing Washington and the International Energy Agency to release their strategic resources several times.
Following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US in June, Tehran opened the Strait of Hormuz. But after the US violated the MoU by blockading Iranian ports, Iran’s Armed Forces closed the maritime corridor once again.
